Whether you’re a Tourist or a Townie, there’s always something different and fun to do in the Los Angeles area.  But the cost of fun in the City of Angels can add up fast.  Below is number 23 in a series of 25 things to do in Los Angeles that will cost $25 or less.

Spend the day at Venice Beach.

You’ll be royally entertained on this world famous three-mile stretch of sand.  A stroll along Ocean Front Walk in Venice Beach will immerse you in a circus-like atmosphere and a tapestry of entertainment.  Street performers, arts and crafts, restaurants, tattoo and piercing parlors, hippy clothing shops, head shops, fortune tellers and strange people will dazzle you.  See bodybuilders flexing their muscles on Muscle Beach.  Watch a game of beach volleyball.  There’s such a variety of flamboyant fun, you may feel like you’ve gone to Oz.

If all of this razzle-dazzle becomes too much, spread a towel out on the sand and take a snooze, surf, swim or just enjoy the ocean view.  To keep your costs down and avoid the often expensive subpar food here, bring a picnic lunch and enjoy it on the beach.

Feeling ambitious?  Get your sweat on.  Rent a bike and join other cyclists and inline skaters along the paved boardwalk that follows the ocean from one end of Venice Beach all the way to Malibu.  There are numerous bike rental shacks all along the boardwalk.  Rates range from $6.00 to $8.00 an hour or $20.00 to $21.00 a day, depending on the rental shack.  Some of them only take cash, so be sure to come prepared.  Here are some rental places to try:

Unless you live nearby, you’ll need to pay for parking at Venice Beach.  City parking lots are available within easy walking distance to the beach (some right next to it), but you’d better get there early, as lots fill up quickly.  Rates range from $4.00 to $15.00 per day, depending on the season.  There are also several private parking lots near Windward Ave., Venice Blvd and Rose Ave., but they can cost up to $25.00 per day.  On weekends, additional parking is available for $5.00 at Westminster Elementary School (enter on Main Street).  Additional Abbot Kinney parking may be found in several lots along Electric Avenue – one street East of Abbot Kinney Boulevard.  As a last resort, you can park in nearby Marina del Rey and take a free shuttle, available at many of the lots during the summer months.
