Gone are the days when ladies and gentlemen dressed up and socialized over an afternoon pot of tea and scones, at least in America. But wait; not so fast. It seems afternoon tea has made a resurgence in Los Angeles, perhaps in light of the success of such shows as Downton Abbey and some very popular Royals across the pond.
An elegant high tea served with a slice of civility in Los Angeles, however, will set you back $35-$60 per person. Instead of the snooty atmosphere and high cost of an English tea room, why not go east and experience an Asian tea ceremony?
When I was in Beijing, I enjoyed a tea ceremony in a traditional tea house. I was amazed at the variety of teas and the techniques used to coax the ultimate flavor from tea leaves. It was a fascinating experience, and the teas were delicious.
But there’s no need to go to Beijing for a cup of Asian tea. Just drop in to Chado Tea Room. For $20 a person ($13 without dessert), you’ll learn about tea history and gain a new appreciation for the fundamentals of producing world-class teas.
Guests choose from 367 specialty teas. And for a little touch of jolly old England, your pot of tea comes with a selection of toasted sandwiches, scones, jam and a slice of cake.
No need to keep a stiff upper lip here, though. The ambiance is casual and relaxing. Reservations are a must.
